Cool things off the Internet this week

It’s true. It’s confirmed. I live under a rock. That giant one set right besides where the anti-social street meets the ignorant by-lane. At least as far as social network is concerned.

What it means is that videos that go viral reach me far too late. Often long after the hype has been done to death and the video in question has been forwarded, retweeted, shared, and liked a billion times over. Yet, it reached me through a random piece of news I happened to go read, for no significant reason, except that I needed a 5 minute break. And I read about the mini shock-and-awe reaction that everyone seemed to have to this video. So if I’m posting it here, its probably something you’ve seen before, read about or possibly even had enough of. But when I saw this video, it rang home like a beacon guiding me home.

Its true. Nobody is special. And yet, everybody is. I think I’ve unknowingly beaten around the bush trying to articulate this in some part, here (write to me for a password, if you care to read it) but not half as completely as this speech does. These words particularly got to me, in a way that only the truth can jolt you out of your skin and give you goosebumps even as your eyes scan the letters that speak it. Because out of that strange cloud of nebulous thought that has guided me along, without my really knowing why or how, suddenly the penny dropped.

“As you commence, then, and before you scatter to the winds, I urge you to do whatever you do for no reason other than you love it and believe in its importance. Don’t bother with work you don’t believe in any more than you would a spouse you’re not crazy about, lest you too find yourself on the wrong side of a Baltimore Orioles comparison. Resist the easy comforts of complacency, the specious glitter of materialism, the narcotic paralysis of self-satisfaction.”

If the video takes too long and you might prefer to read the full text.

Then Anand sent me these beauties, oh-em-gee which transcends our understanding of eye-candy. It’s like a yummy mix of all the things I mostly trawl the internet for. Except cleverly, wildly put together. You think its about books, and yet it is so not. Or maybe it is about the clothes. Or not.

Sometimes I think my friends are out to ruin me. Showing me things like this and this when I am at work. And most definitely going to abandon the task at hand to sit and get absorbed in the vast recesses of sites like these. Who thinks these up? Wild, bizarre and so cool. And for a food geek like me, its a win!

No cool-things-I-saw-on-the-Internet post this week would be complete without this absolute gem. And if you’re from our neck of the woods you will know how much we love (and I’m using the word loosely) Bappi da. His uber confidence to pull things like this off, has made me watch this video four times in the last two days and I want to spread the joy.

So there you have it folks. As you can see a lot of time is being spent on the internet. Far more than normal on any given day. But I told you I’m in the midst of strange times. The stars have clearly not aligned as yet. And it seems that as quickly as I sprung up form the fall, the real effects of the fall only began to show this morning, a whole 24 hours later. Those of you who wrote in to ask how I am feeling, thank you, I’m doing alright, save the blue thumb, aching butt and weirdly sore left arm. So its only natural that I sit in front of a computer screen, for absurdly longer than I should. And if this is what the Internet shows me, its only natural that I share, no?

  1. Those two blog links your friend Anand shared? Are they awesome or what? Something about food/ clothes/ book covers and all those lovely, lovely colors. Sigh. I know what I am going to be doing at work today!

      1. No, re. Was in a hurry. Now at work I can’t access youtube. Soonly, will check. Looks like it is highly recommended. In any case, I could do with some dhinchak music today.

  2. Just read the transcript of that “You’re not Special” speech. Oh boy, been a long time since I read something that makes me happy and scared and wanting-a-clean-slate at the same time :) Sharing it on FB.

How’re you doing? Read about your fall just now, and hope you’re doing better now. Also, stopping a bike with your bare hands? It scared the daylights out of me.

Would love to read your password-protected post, if you don’t mind sharing the password with me. Will drop you an email about it.

    1. Sending you the password by mail..go check :)
Im fine now re. Didnt get hurt too bad. Thumb is less blue at the moment. Just hurt my wrist and thumb..else is all fine.

  3. i live under a rock too – hadn’t heard this speech yet. really wonderful. i loved the mountain analogy – “Climb it so you can see the world, not so it can see you.” beautiful and so relevant to the world we live in..
